Tiramisu

We all know the desert Tiramisu and we all know it comes from Italy. Some of us know how to make it, though no one knows for sure, even Italy not everyone agrees. Though most people here know that the official recipe has no liquor in it, a lot like it with a touch of Grappa mixed through the coffee. I was lucky enough to learn to make one of the recipes!

But that's not what this story is about. It's about the origin, which, i have no doubt, will probably also have other versions. This version was told to me by my neighbor in Polcenigo.

Tiramisu is a very old recipe. Long before the time when they started to write down the recipes, this one was was made. It was tradition to offer it to the newlyweds after their wedding night. Nowadays the night isn't all that special, because it's perfectly fine to have intercourse before that night. However, in those days it wasn't, so that first night was full of sexual activity and exploring of each others bodies. If the wedding day itself hadn't exhausted you, the night certainly would. Tiramisu, full of sugar and caffeine, was meant to give new energy.

Therefore it is no incident that the name Tiramisu has a strong resemblance to the phrase: tira me su.
Which literally translated means: pull me up, which is used, also in other languages, when someone is low on energy or down and needs someone or something to lift the mood, or to pull him through the day.

Nowadays Tiramisu is a loved desert in most parts of the world. Who knows it might pull you out of your after dinner dip!
